Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, a Democrat, is facing scorn after a member of her administration sent out an email invitation for a segregated Christmas party that reportedly excluded white city officials.

“On behalf of Mayor Michelle Wu, I cordially invite you and a guest to the Electeds of Color Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkman House, 33 Beacon Street,” wrote City Council Relations Director Denise DosSantos in an email about the event.

DosSantos accidentally sent the email to every city official.

She purportedly quickly noticed her mistake and, 15 minutes later, DosSantos sent out a follow-up email apologizing for sending the Christmas party invitation to everyone on staff, seemingly indicating it was not intended to be seen by white city employees.

“I wanted to apologize for my previous email regarding the Holiday Party for tomorrow,” she wrote, according to WFXT-TV. I did send that to everyone by accident. I apologize if my email may have offended or came across as so. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.”

One of the people who received the errant email, Councilperson Frank Baker, said the idea of a segregated, ethnicity-based holiday party is “divisive.”

“I do find it divisive, but what are you going to do about it,” he told the local news outlet. “You dont want me at a party, Im not going to come to a party.”

For her part, Wu reportedly defended the segregated event, according to the Daily Mail.

“I can understand someone might be confused or worried if certain people werent being invited at all or were being left out of any type of celebration,” she said. “But I assure you, everyone on the Boston City Council has got an invitation to multiple types of events and holiday parties.”

Wu, who has faced allegations of discrimination in the past, indicated such parties have been ongoing for years.

The left-leaning mayor, elected in 2021, was sued earlier this year by a group of white restauranteurs who claimed they were targeted with city fees in part due to their ethnicities. That lawsuit, it should be noted, was ultimately withdrawn after a series of legal setbacks.
